Measurement of the green spectral line of mercury by means of a diffraction grating

It was of great importance for our understanding of the structure of the atoms to measure exactly the spectral lines emitted by single atoms of a specific chemical element.

In this experiment the students have to measure the wavelength of the green line of the mercury atoms. Here several interference maxima can be observed. When you sketch the angle of diffraction against the order of interference, the wavelength can be mesaured with quite good precision.
