Identification of chlorophylls and carotinoids by their photometric absorption spectra

A thin-layer chromatogram of a leaf extract is prepared. The pigment bands are then re-dissolved individually and absorption spectra of each pigment are measured. The pigments are identified using comparative spectra from the scientific literature. The links between their absorption properties, molecular structures and functions are elaborated.

This course is suited for students from grade 10 on and can favourably be combined with the other plant physiological courses.
