Aspirin

Acetyl salicylic acid (Aspirin®)
In a first step the students synthesise acetylsalicylic acid (better known as Aspirin) and analyse the product by thin layer chromatography. Subsequently the purity may be tested – comparable to the industrial production – by means of photometry or NMR-spectroscopy. The course contents may be extended by acid/base titration and mass spectroscopy in order to figure out the molecular mass. Experiments to the galenics of the pharmaceutical are also possible.
